Merriman’s - Kapalua: Reviews & Ratings

Delicious. Ambience, service, excellent. Rating is off food and overall. Value isn't included because I'll explain. Compared to some local places, etc. Joeys Kitchen example - nice piece of Mahi mahi (6pz it looked like) for 26$. Same fish at Merriman's? 72$ for a tiny piece of fish, maybe deck of cards. Apps were great, everything is great, except the price. It's crazy. Merrimans: Just keep in mind, they have crazy overhead with servers and staff so the prices are extremely high. Local joint like Joeys (Kapalua) 1/3 price. Ambience is different so keep that in mind. Treat yourself to nice dinner, just know you'll pay big for it :) Maui is crazy expensive so par for the course to get 3-5 oz of fish from 30-70 bucks. It is what it is.

Sorry, we might be the outlier here but this place is honestly overhyped. The only thing we can say is that we were disappointed. Don't get me wrong, the service and ambiance is great! We completely understand the appeal. However, the food was disappointingly ok. I really do apologize and hate to leave this type of review but I want to be honest and don't want to just praise the place because everybody just seems to accept this as a fact. Unfortunately, we were not impressed by the place at all. There's other local mom and pop shops around the area with better food!! maybe it's our fault since we expected a lot more; especially factoring the price point of the dishes!!! We started the night with an "escargot" dish made out of octopus (not a true escargot). We actually love octopus and didn't mind the play on the dish, however; the flavor was good but nothing special. For the entrees, they were all meh. The kid's pasta's were just ok. Nothing that screamed gourmet pasta. It was a choice of like butter cheese or tomato based sauce. My fish was dry and flavor was meh. Sorry... I really tried to love the dish but it also didn't help that it was paired with a dry unexciting bland quinoa. Also, there was literally only ONE lonely shrimp that also was underseasoned. Not even a nice cross hatch char on the shell to elevate the look of it. I don't know, the ratio of one lonely shrimp seemed off...also, I feel like maybe a nice glaze, sauce or sprinkling of seasoning would've helped? Idk, my kids (kids say the darndest things) kept on saying how the food we had in the afternoon at The Fish Market Maui was so much better. Unfortunately, we agree with them!! They got the prep and cooked the seafood right; more flavors and as moist as one can imagine moist should be. My husband had the seared ahi tuna which was also unimpressive. It's the usual seared ahi tuna with the usual dish story; rice and some vinaigrette coleslaw. Even the "sauce" on his dish was meh ( some usual version of soy sauce based reduction. We honestly expected like a unique local flavor sauce combination like maybe a calamansi with lilikoi glaze perhaps?). I don't know... something unique, local, and unexpected; something that a highly esteemed establishment is expected to uniquely come up with.Despite that bit of a snafu, we enjoyed the ambience and the live music! The guy that was singing elevated the sunset ambiance with his acoustic music. We enjoyed his music selection! The cocktails and wine we had was thankfully delicious! Loved the use of tropical and local flavors on the drink! Our server Brandy, was amazing; cheerfully efficient, friendly, and attentive. Actually the servers around our area were very attentive and friendly. Service was impeccable. Complements to the staff.

After extensive research online on Yelp, multiple food blogs and Reddit (yes, Reddit is a fabulous source for food reviews), we decided to book Merriman's Kapalua, and it was probably one of the best dining experiences I've ever had - definitely ranking in the top 10 so far. In addition to that, the view of the ocean and sunset from our table was exceptionally breathtaking. From start to end, our server Miguel gave us a personalized experience. He was attentive, resourceful, and added to our evening. We were celebrating my partner's birthday, and Merriman's - Kapalua and staff definitely made it one to remember. From the live music to front-row seat watching the sunset to 5-star food quality, we were big fans. We easily spent over a few enjoyable hours just enjoying the entire experience. This place felt like a dream. The food, drinks, and dessert were all phenomenal. We honestly had zero to no complaints about any of it, which is rare! Miguel did a great job pacing the orders too, because everything came out at the right temperature and time. The three standouts of the evening: Daily Fish Special - Hawaiian Ono Pineapple-Macadamia Nut Bread Pudding No Ka 'Oi My partner and I agreed that the Ono was probably one of the best-prepared fish we've had in a very long time. We were blown away by how tender, flavorful, and delicious it was. Overall, we're extremely huge fans of Merriman's - Kapalua. I strongly recommend checking this place out if you're celebrating a special occasion and/or are looking for an upscale food experience in Maui! Oh, and keep an eye out for reservations! We initially had an earlier time, but was able to snag a reservation closer to sunset. Be diligent! We're both still smiling about how magical the experience was!

This has been hands down the best experience my husband and I have had in Maui thus far on our honeymoon. We had 5:30 p.m. reservations and were able to have a seat with a wonderful sunset view. When we were seated our waiter offered us a champagne toast to celebrate with, and was kind enough to switch it out to bubbly grape juice after we said we don't really drink. It was such a pleasant start to the meal. The complimentary bread was light and delicious. We also had the purple rain and virgin mai tai mocktails, and both were really yummy. We started with the octopus escargot, which was a super unique take on escargot that I really enjoyed. It came with two pieces of bread, but I actually liked it with the complimentary bread more. We also split the Caesar salad, which was made with fresh anchovies and they actually asked if we would like any others added to the top. For our meal, we actually split the macadamia mahi mahi, and they kindly plated it on two separate plates for us, and the portions were perfect. I actually couldn't even finish my half. Finally, for dessert, we weren't even planning to order anything since we didn't have much room, but they still brought us a small scoop of vanilla ice cream and a macadamia nut and chocolate dessert that my husband absolutely loved. Overall, fantastic meal, definitely would go back.

The whole restaurant was absolutely beautiful. I love how it was an open patio and you have this beautiful view of the ocean. The service was so nice and checked on my family and I regularly. I loveddd the bread and tomato sauce they served as complimentary. It was a delicious starter when waiting for your entrees. I got the sea scallops and clams, it was delicious and creamy. I would love to come back and try more on their menu.

I wanted to treat my boyfriend for his birthday and use it as an excuse to eat somewhere on island I otherwise would avoid due to price tag. I am so happy we chose to do that with Merriman's. We were greeted at our table with complimentary champagne and a personalized Happy Birthday menu for him which was a lovely way to set the tone. They do note reservation tables are given by res time so we went at 4:45 and got a lovely table at the window with a view of the bay. The mai thai and the basil vodka cocktail were great. The spicy tequila cocktail wasn't anything special and was more of flavored chili water than a fun drink for my taste. Not much in the way of a beer list, and the wine list was fairly priced. We got the Tako Escargot (octopus) as an appetizer and then proceeded with the Filet and the Scallops and Clams. Absolutely everything we ate was delicious. We could have taken or left the bread service with the tomato jam and gazpacho palette cleanser but it was still nice to have. The espresso martinis at the patio bar were a lovely post-dinner sunset cocktail as well! Had such a magical time.

What a blessed dining experience! It was our first time here, but our dear friends who have been before praised their food and drinks, and especially the phenomenal view! We arrived just a few minutes prior to them opening. We didn't have reservations, but it was early enough and the friendly host was so kind to seat our party of 5 right away. We placed our food and drink orders as soon as we sat down and then went outside for a quick photo op since it had just finished raining. LOL! Phenomenal view of the Pacific and the island of Molokai in the background. Our drinks were overflowing and sinfully refreshing (mahalo bartender), and our pupus came out hot and delicious! The bread service and shot of mushroom bisque was next level! I can't end my review without special mention to Alvaro (not "Alfonso" because we enjoyed the food and drinks...lol!), who took great care of us from beginning to end! The best places have the best workers! Aloha & mahalo till next time...

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Merriman's in Maui, and I can say without a doubt that it was one of the most remarkable culinary experiences I have ever had. From the moment I stepped into the restaurant, I was captivated by the stunning panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the lush, verdant landscapes that surrounded us. The service at Merriman's was truly exceptional. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and went above and beyond to ensure that my dining experience was nothing short of perfect. They were able to provide expert recommendations on the menu and were more than happy to accommodate any special requests or dietary needs. But the real star of the show was the food, particularly the fresh seafood. I opted for the daily catch, and I was blown away by the quality and freshness of the fish. It was perfectly cooked, with a delicate and flavorful preparation that allowed the natural sweetness of the seafood to shine. The presentation was also top-notch, with each dish served with an artistic flair that added to the overall dining experience. Beyond the food and service, the ambiance at Merriman's was truly breathtaking. The open-air design and strategic placement of the tables allowed for unobstructed views of the ocean and the surrounding landscape, creating a sense of tranquility and connection with nature that is hard to find in a restaurant setting. Overall, my experience at Merriman's in Maui was nothing short of exceptional. From the stunning views and impeccable service to the delectable fresh seafood and inviting ambiance, this restaurant has truly earned its place as one of the best dining destinations on the island. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking an unforgettable culinary adventure in Maui.
